Years
of Australian research has overcome the problems of pollination
and gone on to evaluate the merits of the most productive
varieties.
A productive variety is not just the number of kilos per tree
but other factors such as the percentage of kernel weight
or defective nuts etc.
The criteria for confectionery
is more about flavour and removal of the pellicle or skin
called blanching. Nut size is also a consideration.
Global warming now has to be
considered before new long term hazelnut tree plantings are
undertaken. Varieties proven over time in the hotter parts
of the world may be the answer.
The following varieties are
suggested for this reason and are suitable for confectionery
or nuts in shell. Less chilling would be required and being
early or mid-season varieties they also have the advantage
of sufficient pollen being available to them.
Tonda
di Giffoni average
kernel size 14.6 mm
Early variety - low chill requirement
Good pest and disease resistance
Good nutty flavour
Even nut size
Barcelona
average kernel size 15.7 mm
Mid-season variety - medium chill requirement
Moderate pest and disease resistance
Good nutty flavour
Adapts to most conditions

Large plantings are set
out in a grid pattern with the rows running N-S so that the
sun passes over each side of the tree. For good access and
to avoid trees shading each other we recommend 5m between
trees and 6m between rows. This will mean about 250 to the
hectare or 100 to the acre.
